They gathered round to watch the footage. It had been smuggled over the border; it was a video that everybody wanted to see.

Sector 4 had closed its borders. Vast walls were going up. They’d become a silent state. Nobody knew what was going on any more.

‘Okay, everybody. Let’s take a look, shall we?’

The video was poor quality, but clear enough. It was news footage. President Lance Henderson was on stage, giving his speech. There was a shot from the crowd. Confusion. More shots. Whoever had filmed this had been in the public seating area inside the auditorium. For a couple of minutes there was just a blurred screen. More shouting, more shots. A view of Bryce Kincade on the stage. James Morgan joining him. Audra in the background, dazed, unaware of what was going on. Then, Scorsese’s voice, challenging Kincade.

Suddenly, loud and clear, they heard the voice of the person doing the recording.

‘How could you kill our babies, you monster!’

‘That’s Laney!’ Michael cried.

The video blurred again and all that could be heard was Laney’s voice, screaming abuse.

Then another shot. The one that started the second panic.

The video footage came to an abrupt end.

Another video came on the screen. This time it was much more polished, part of a newsreel. It was showing public hangings. They recognized the location. It was outside the gates to Fortrillium. They were hanging them by chains. Deena winced as she saw Scorsese’s face on the screen, defiant to the end. As Simone’s terrified image appeared next, she burst into tears. She too was hanged, along with a number of politicians who’d been branded as traitors.

This was the place they’d called their home. It was descending into barbarism. Innocent people were being killed.

They’d escaped with their lives. As one-by-one they’d leaped into the unknown, they’d pressed the ignition buttons as directed by Richter. As they pressed the buttons, the jet packs flared up and hand controls emerged to either side. A headset moved over their ears from above and a calm voice asked them to set their destination.

‘Sector 15!’ they’d all shouted. That was where they’d agreed to meet.

That was all they had to do. The jet packs took their weight, set the route and lowered their level to an altitude that took them just above house height.

They watched Richter’s helicopter explode in a ball of flames as it crashed to the ground. They were hovering too low for the jets to pursue them and they’d crossed the border by the time any other defensive action could be launched. It wasn’t until they landed that they realized Alex wasn’t with them. No one had seen what had happened to him.

A month passed. Audra was given urgent medical attention and, only when she was fit enough, Jasmine and her team began to conduct experiments. Having an Immune in their care would give them the breakthrough they needed.

Michael shaved his beard and cut his hair. Gradually he regained his strength. Soon he began to look like the man that Susan remembered and they started to rebuild their relationship bit by bit.
